Iranian Ambassador to Bangladesh Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi said on Sunday that Bangladeshi ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to pass safely in the near future, as diplomatic coordination continues amid heightened regional tensions.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a mourning rally and an anti-war crime exhibition titled “Remembering the Martyred Students of the Islamic Republic of Iran: Demanding Trial and Accountability for US-Israeli War Crimes”, organised by the Revolutionary Students’ Council at Battala on the University of Dhaka campus.
The ambassador said several vessels, including those from Bangladesh, have been delayed in the strategic waterway due to the ongoing conflict situation.
He said Iran is working with the relevant authorities and will engage with the government of Bangladesh to facilitate the safe and swift movement of the stranded vessels.
He expressed optimism that the ships would be able to cross the strait within a short time once coordination measures are completed.
Referring to Bangladesh-Iran relations, Jalil Rahimi described the ties between the two countries as friendly and cooperative.
He said Bangladesh holds a brotherly position in Iran’s foreign relations and emphasised that there is no hostility between the two nations.
Speaking on broader regional developments, including tensions between Iran and the United States and prospects for a ceasefire, the ambassador welcomed Pakistan-led mediation efforts.
He also expressed appreciation for the role of Oman and other countries involved in diplomatic initiatives.
The ambassador said Iran remains open to dialogue conducted with dignity and mutual respect.
