Following a catastrophic fire that severely damaged Sajek Valley, the local administration has temporarily advised tourists to refrain from visiting the area for safety reasons, reports UNB.
On Monday afternoon, a blaze broke out at Obokash Resort and quickly spread to nearby resorts, cottages, and local dwellings. The fire, which lasted for about three hours, devastated over 120 buildings, including 35 resorts, 37 cottages, seven restaurants, and 19 shops.
Shirin Akter, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Baghaichhari, stated that the decision to discourage tourism was made to ensure the safety of visitors amidst the ongoing crisis. Local residents, along with the Army and Border Guard Bangladesh, assisted firefighters in controlling the blaze.
The full extent of the damages is still being assessed, with local authorities continuing to evaluate the destruction. Suporno Deb Borman, President of the Cottage and Resort Owners’ Association of Sajek, reported significant losses, as many local homes and businesses were also affected.
Rahul Chakma, Organising Secretary of the Sajek Resort Owners’ Association, expressed his concerns and called for the establishment of a fire service station in Sajek to prevent future disasters. The local administration is working diligently to support those affected and ensure the area’s safety before tourism can resume.
