Dhaka, the densely populated capital, ranked 15th among cities with the worst air quality, with an AQI score of 96 at 9 am today (Sunday).
Today’s air quality was classified as ‘moderate,’ meaning it poses a minor threat, though sensitive individuals are advised to limit prolonged outdoor exertion, according to the AQI index, reports UNB.
India’s Delhi, Pakistan’s Lahore, and Nepal’s Kathmandu occupied the first, second, and third spots respectively, with AQI scores of 278, 196, and 183.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air is and what associated health effects might be a concern.
The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone (O₃).
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality typically turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon season.
