Sanjida Afrin, a former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), has been temporarily suspended by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The action came amid allegations that she sought to shield former Law Minister Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman, ex-advisor to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from scrutiny in high-profile cases.
The suspension, announced Sunday, places Sanjida under the Barisal range while she receives subsistence allowances per government regulations. She was most recently serving in the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and has been dismissed under the Public Service Rules.
The allegations stem from a leaked final report clearing Anisul Huq, Salman F Rahman, and retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former NTMC Director General, of involvement in two murder cases linked to the July-August student uprising. Detective Police (DB) Inspector Jahangir Arif, who prepared the report, claimed he acted under orders from ADC Afrin. Afrin, however, denied the accusations, asserting she had no authority over such decisions.
Inspector Jahangir has also been suspended pending investigation.
This isn’t the first time Afrin has faced controversy. In September 2023, she was implicated in the alleged detention and assault of student leaders at Shahbagh Police Station.
