The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Tajul Islam, has stated that former police chief Abdullah Al Mamun was the "supreme commander" of the July massacre, carrying out genocide under his leadership.
Tajul Islam made these remarks during a tribunal hearing on Wednesday, where eight former police officers, including Mamun, faced charges for crimes against humanity related to the July-August massacre. The tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar, began the proceedings at 11:30 a.m.
Among those brought before the tribunal were former police chief Abdullah Al Mamun, former NTMC Director General Major General (Retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Abdullahil Kafi, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Jashim Uddin Molla, former Additional Superintendent Shahidur Islam, and former police officers from Jatrabari, Gulshan, and Dhaka North Detective Branch, including Abul Hasan, Mazharul Haque, and Arafat Hossain.
The hearing is part of the ongoing case filed against these officers for their involvement in crimes against humanity during the deadly July-August violence. On October 27, a three-member tribunal, led by Justice Majumdar, approved the prosecution's application and ordered the eight officials to be presented before the court.
Arrest warrants have been issued for 17 former police officers implicated in the massacre, and those in custody will be brought to the tribunal for further proceedings.
