Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested Asadur Rahman Kiron, Vice-President of the Awami League's Gazipur Metropolitan unit and former panel mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, while he was allegedly attempting to flee to India through the Shikarpur border in Sharsha upazila, Jashore, reports UNB.
The arrest was made late on Monday night after a tip-off led a patrol team from the Shikarpur Border Outpost (BOP) of the 49th Battalion to conduct a raid in the Betna area around 11:30 pm.
BGB officials stated that during initial questioning, Kiron admitted to attempting to cross the border with the help of a local human trafficker, identified as Nur Nabi, from Ramchandrapur village. Kiron reportedly agreed to pay BDT 100,000 for the illegal crossing.
Legal action is currently underway, and Kiron has been transferred to Sharsha Police Station for further investigation.
