Appellate Division judge Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to be the chief of the search committee formed for establishing a new Election Commission, while High Court’s Justice AKM Asaduzzaman would be a member of the committee.
Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has already sent the list of the two judges to the cabinet division for approval. After the formation of the Election Commission, the voter list will be revised.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul announced that a search committee has been formed to establish the Election Commission, and a gazette notification in this regard would be published within a day.
The recommendation has been submitted to the Chief Adviser for signature, the adviser had told journalists, following a meeting with UN human rights chief Volker Turk.
He emphasised the government’s steps toward a fair election, starting with the establishment of the Election Commission.
He further said that once the Election Commission is constituted, the priority will be updating the voter list to eliminate fake entries allegedly added by the previous government.
After the meeting, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said he discussed with the Law Adviser matters related to the rule of law and human rights issues.
Turk also mentioned the importance of aligning government reforms with human rights standards, adding that a fact-finding committee is investigating human rights violations committed from 1 July to 15 August, and the UN headquarters is closely monitoring the situation.
