A mini-stroke, medically known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), occurs when blood flow to the brain is temporarily disrupted.
According to a British doctor, it is essentially a “heart attack of the brain,” highlighting its seriousness despite its short duration. If symptoms resolve within 24 hours, it is classified as a TIA, while longer-lasting symptoms indicate a full stroke.

Experts say the symptoms of a mini-stroke can appear suddenly and may include:

- S (Speech): Slurred or difficult speech
- T (Time): Time to seek urgent medical help
Who is most at risk?
According to Dr French, people over the age of 50 are more commonly affected. However, younger individuals are not immune.
He noted that some may be at risk due to a condition called patent foramen ovale, a small hole in the heart present from birth.
In older adults, atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, is a major contributing factor.
This condition can lead to the formation of blood clots, which may travel to the brain and trigger a TIA or stroke.
The NHS has emphasized that anyone experiencing symptoms of a mini-stroke should seek medical attention immediately.
Even if symptoms disappear quickly, the episode could signal a higher risk of a more severe stroke in the near future.
