Healthy lips are more than an aesthetic feature – they reflect hydration, lifestyle, and self-care.
Dr Rinky Kapoor, an Indian dermatologist, told Hindustan Times, “Lips are one of the most delicate areas of the skin and are often prone to pigmentation, dryness, and cracking because they lack oil glands. Sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, and frequent lip licking are common causes of darkening and uneven tone.”
Lip pigmentation and causes
Lip pigmentation occurs when lips darken or turn patchy. Factors include sun exposure, smoking, caffeine, allergic reactions, dehydration, and vitamin deficiencies.
Remedies
Stay hydrated and use lip balms with SPF. Exfoliate weekly to remove dead cells, and choose vitamin E–enriched balms for repair. Natural remedies like beetroot juice, rose petals in milk, or aloe vera can help lighten lips.
Uneven Lip Tone
Uneven tone results from poor blood circulation, harsh lipsticks, stress, or nutritional gaps. Almond or rosehip oil massage, iron and B12-rich foods, and paraben-free lipsticks can restore balance.
Cracked & chapped lips
Often caused by dry weather, frequent licking, or deficiencies in vitamin B, zinc, and iron. To heal, apply lip balm regularly, use honey with ghee or coconut oil, and humidify rooms.
Dr Kapoor advises, “If persistent pigmentation occurs, dermatological treatments like mild chemical peels or laser therapy may be recommended. Most importantly, use the right type of make up, since improper lipstick usage etc can seriously impact lip aesthetics.”
Pro tips
Hydrate with eight to ten glasses of water daily, avoid alcohol-based lipsticks, apply lip masks weekly, and maintain a vitamin-rich diet.
Consistent care, hydration, and sun protection are the keys to soft, pink, and healthy lips.
