Social media often makes some startling claims. The latest one is that ‘death begins in your big toe. ‘ “Why? Because the big toe is the farthest geographical point in your body from your heart. Our heart takes blood, reoxygenates it, and sends it back to the tissues of the body. Blood flow is one of the most important aspects of our health. When we sit for longer than an hour, 50 per cent of the blood flow to our legs has decreased. So, you need movement to improve the health of your feet.”
So, what experts say?
Dr Saumya Sekhar Jenasamant, consultant, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, contended that while the idea is “over-generalised”, it makes an important point.
“The big toe is one of the furthest points away from the heart. Maintaining proper blood flow is crucial for keeping distant areas healthy. There may be problems with blood flow in the extremities, and particularly in patients with diabetes, peripheral artery disease (PAD), or heart issues. If a debilitating health complication develops, it may start in the toes or feet. Yet, the reality of death does not technically begin in the toe, but significant deleterious health problems may show warning signs there first,” said Dr Jenasamant.
When circulation is poor, the first place that suffers is likely the feet, because they are the furthest from the heart. “You may experience numbness, tingling, coldness, discoloration, and wounds that do not heal. In extreme cases, mostly patients with PAD or diabetic neuropathy, this can lead to infections, ulcers, and gangrene if untreated,” said Dr Jenasamant.
The heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body, but when one sits for over an hour, blood flow to the legs can be impacted and is low. This can lead to stiffness, numbness, and even swelling in the feet. Hence, movement is essential, said Dr Manjusha Agarwal, senior consultant, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospital Parel, Mumbai.
What is the importance of movement?
Movement is key. Sitting in one position can restrict your circulation, particularly in the legs and feet. Dr Jenasamant explained that statistically, blood flow to the legs could be decreased by almost fifty percent after one hour of sitting without movement.
You can take a short break to stand, move around, or stretch, said Dr Jenasamant.
What should individuals be mindful of?
Do not ignore symptoms relating to your feet. According to Dr Jenasamant, cold toes, cuts that heal slowly, changes in skin colour, and persistent numbness should all be discussed with your doctor, especially if you have a history of diabetes, smoking, or are sedentary.
