Once a quiet staple of traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, matcha – a finely ground green tea powder – is now a global sensation. From Starbucks lattes to TikTok tutorials and skincare routines, matcha is everywhere.

But behind its trendy facade lies centuries of history, craftsmanship, and a wealth of health benefits that have captivated wellness enthusiasts and influencers alike.

What exactly Is Matcha?

The word matcha literally means “ground tea” in Japanese. Unlike regular green tea, which is steeped and then discarded, matcha is whisked into water, so you’re consuming the entire leaf in powdered form.

The result? A bright green beverage that’s both earthy and creamy, with a unique umami flavor.

Originating from 16th-century Kyoto, matcha became central to the Japanese tea ceremony, developed by tea master Sen no Rikyu. Today, it’s classified into different grades, from ceremonial matcha (used in rituals) to culinary matcha, popular in desserts, smoothies, and baking.

How is it made?

Making matcha is no simple task – it’s a meticulous process that requires patience, precision, and passion.

Shade-Grown Tencha Leaves: Weeks before harvest, tea plants are covered to block sunlight. This boosts chlorophyll and L-theanine production, deepening the green color and enhancing the flavor.

Hand-Picking: Only the youngest, most tender leaves are picked by hand.

Steaming and Drying: The leaves are steamed to halt oxidation and then dried.

Deveining and Grinding: The leaves are deveined and then ground with traditional stone mills, producing a superfine, vibrant green powder.

It can take one hour to produce just 40 grams of matcha – no wonder it’s more expensive than regular green tea.

Health benefits of Matcha

Matcha is more than a pretty face – it’s a powerhouse of nutrition.

Here's why health enthusiasts swear by it:

Rich in antioxidants

Matcha contains high levels of catechins, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is known to fight free radicals and reduce inflammation.

Boosts brain function

Thanks to its caffeine (about 48mg per serving) and L-theanine, matcha offers a calm alertness – providing focus without the jitters often associated with coffee.

Supports heart health

Studies suggest that the antioxidants in matcha may help lower LDL cholesterol and improve blood circulation.

Aids weight loss

Matcha can help boost metabolism and fat burning, making it a popular pre-workout drink.

Detoxifies naturally

The high chlorophyll content makes matcha a gentle natural detoxifier, supporting liver health.

Cultural allure: More than just a drink

While its health benefits are impressive, matcha’s cultural depth and aesthetics are equally appealing.

In Japan, the tea ceremony is a mindful ritual – a quiet, meditative act of hospitality. The slow preparation, the bamboo chasen whisk, the serene presentation – it’s all part of what makes matcha a ceremony in a cup.

Today, many people around the world are embracing this slow tea ritual as a way to disconnect and reconnect with the moment.

The Global Craze: From Kyoto to California

In 2023, Japan produced 4,176 tonnes of matcha – nearly triple the amount made in 2012.

Over half of it is exported, mainly to the U.S., Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Why the explosion in popularity?

Social Media Power: Platforms like TikTok and Instagram are overflowing with aesthetically pleasing matcha tutorials, #matchalatte art, and wellness influencers swearing by its benefits.

Gen Z Obsession: "I feel like Gen Z really drove this enthusiasm for matcha," said Stevie Youssef, a marketing professional at a matcha bar in Los Angeles.

Versatility in Use: From drinks to desserts, matcha’s culinary versatility has made it a favorite among chefs and home bakers alike.

Gifting Trend: Premium Japanese matcha has also become a luxurious gift item, appreciated for its quality and presentation.

Challenges at the Source: Can Japan Keep Up?

Despite the booming demand, Japanese farmers are struggling to keep pace.

Matcha farming is labor-intensive, and younger generations are increasingly reluctant to continue the tradition.

Producers like Masahiro Okutomi from Sayama note that growing tencha leaves requires special structures and intensive care, making it both costly and physically demanding.

This raises the question: As matcha becomes global, how can its authentic, artisanal roots be preserved?

Whether you’re sipping it in a chic café, adding it to your smoothie bowl, or using it as a moment of mindful relaxation, matcha is more than a drink – it’s a lifestyle. With its ancient origins, modern appeal, and robust health benefits, matcha represents the perfect fusion of tradition and trend.

As its green wave continues to rise, matcha is set to stay not just in our cups, but also in our wellness routines, kitchens, and cultures worldwide.

Matcha quick facts:

  • Caffeine content: ~48mg per cup
  • Key nutrients: Antioxidants, L-theanine, chlorophyll
  • Shelf life: 6–12 months (store in a cool, dark place)
  • Popular uses: Lattes, smoothies, baking, ice cream
