Every year on May 25, World Thyroid Day raises awareness about thyroid disorders and highlights the importance of thyroid health. This year, health experts stress the powerful link between nutrition and a healthy thyroid.
Dr Mukesh Batra, an Indian doctor, says that the thyroid gland plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and hormone balance. To ensure its proper function, it’s essential to include certain key nutrients in your daily diet.
According to Dr Batra, the top five nutrients for thyroid health are:
Iodine – Crucial for thyroid hormone production. Found in iodised salt, seafood like rohu and surmai, and dairy products such as paneer and curd.
Selenium – Acts as a strong antioxidant and helps convert inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to its active form (T3). Sources include whole wheat, lentils, sunflower seeds, and rice.
Zinc – Supports hormone production and boosts immunity. You can find it in legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
Iron – Needed for thyroid hormone synthesis. Best taken through leafy greens, lentils, and lean meats.
Vitamin D – Helps regulate immune function and supports the thyroid, especially in autoimmune conditions. Get it from sunlight and fortified foods.
Dr Batra also emphasized the impact of stress, poor sleep, and lifestyle choices on thyroid health. Mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation, along with seven to eight hours of quality sleep, can positively influence hormonal balance.
He added that a balanced diet with whole foods—vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, whole grains, and enough water—forms a strong foundation. Herbal teas like green tea and ashwagandha may offer additional benefits.
On this World Thyroid Day, remember that small changes in diet and lifestyle can go a long way in supporting your thyroid and overall well-being.
