A Reddit post recently struck a chord with many as it shed light on how challenging it can be to form genuine friendships as an adult in a bustling city like Bengaluru.
Posted in the r/Bengaluru subreddit, the thread is titled “How do you guys make friends and groups?” The original poster explained that she was reaching out on behalf of a close friend who has been grappling with loneliness since relocating to Bengaluru last year.
“My friend moved to Bengaluru last year and has been feeling pretty lonely ever since. We often talk about how hard it is to meet new people as an adult, but lately she’s kind of given up trying,” she wrote.
She went on to describe her friend as a full-time working professional, a Malayali with a sharp sense of humour, and someone who is “genuinely one of the most fun people to be around.” Despite several attempts to connect with others, her friend has repeatedly faced setbacks, leaving her feeling increasingly isolated in the city.
“She’d especially love to have a few good female friends or be part of a women’s group she can hang out with - just to feel less alone,” the post continued, with the Redditor asking for advice on events, groups, or platforms that could help her friend meet new people in Bengaluru.
“It really hurts to see her struggle without anyone to share her time and joy with,” she added.
The post quickly gained attention, with fellow Redditors chiming in to offer solidarity and advice. One user reflected on the broader issue, noting, “Most locals also don't have the quality and quantity of friends they once had,” and pointed to factors like moving away for studies or jobs, or life changes like marriage. “It has everything to do with our generation, work and social media.”
Suggestions poured in, with recommendations ranging from attending Cubbon Reads sessions to exploring events hosted by We Play BLR. Others mentioned using digital platforms like dating apps, Facebook groups, and local community meet-ups as helpful tools to meet like-minded individuals.
The post sparked an important conversation—one that reflects the shared experiences of many adults navigating the loneliness that can come with urban life.
