Hair oiling is a time-tested beauty ritual often associated with faster hair growth. But does it truly make your hair grow longer?
Indian cosmetic dermatologist Dr Rashmi Shetty said the belief that oiling accelerates growth is a myth. She explains that the actual length of your hair is determined by the anagen phase—the growth phase of the hair cycle—which is genetically fixed.
“If your genes dictate a certain maximum length, your hair won’t grow beyond that, no matter what oil you use,” she said.
What does oiling do?
According to Dr Shetty, while it doesn’t stimulate growth from the scalp, it protects the hair shaft, reducing breakage and improving texture. This creates the illusion of longer, healthier hair by preventing damage and split ends.
She warns against applying heavy oils to the scalp. “Your scalp already produces natural oils. Adding more can clog pores, attract dust, and even lead to dandruff or scalp inflammation if not washed out properly,” she noted.
Tips for correct hair oiling
Apply oil only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Avoid massaging oil into the scalp unless prescribed for specific conditions.
Use lightweight, non-comedogenic oils, and make sure to wash them out properly.
In essence, oiling improves the quality of existing hair but doesn’t alter how fast it grows. Real hair growth relies more on internal factors like diet, scalp health, and overall wellness than any topical treatment.
