Potatoes have often been unfairly blamed for weight gain, but an Indian health influencer and longevity coach, Prashant Desai, explained they are actually highly nutritious.
He emphasized that potatoes aid in weight control, are affordable, and rich in potassium. The real issue lies not with the vegetable itself but with the way it is cooked.
According to Desai, potatoes are not junk food; rather, unhealthy cooking methods like deep-frying and adding excessive salt turn them into unhealthy dishes. He pointed out that 100 grams of potato provide two grams of complete protein, are low in calories, and high in satiety.
A simple preparation — such as boiled potatoes with the skin, paired with ghee — can be highly beneficial for health.
Potatoes are also an excellent post-workout food, helping in refuelling and recovery. They are rich in potassium, offering a surprising nutritional comparison: 100 grams of banana have 358 mg of potassium, whereas potatoes, though often underrated, provide a significant amount too.
Further highlighting their benefits, Desai noted that the amino acid distribution in potatoes is almost identical to that of animal protein, making them a valuable source of plant-based protein. Additionally, 100 grams of potato contains just 87 calories.
Desai shared his personal favourite ways of consuming potatoes — boiled with a sprinkle of salt and chaat masala, or mixed into salads. When he dislikes a particular green vegetable, he blends a boiled potato with it to improve the taste.
Experts from the University of California also support these claims, stating that potatoes are rich in vitamin C, minerals, fibre, and contain no fat, cholesterol, or sodium, making them a healthy addition to any diet when prepared properly.
