Non-performing loans (NPLs) in Bangladesh's banking sector stood at Tk 2 lakh 84 thousand 977 crores at the end of September this year, which is 16.93 percent of the total disbursed loans. Indeed, this is the highest ratio of disbursed loans to bad loans in the last 16 years.
An updated report of Bangladesh Bank showed this information on Sunday.
According to central bank data, as of last June, backed out loans were Tk 2 lakh 11 thousand 391 crores. In other words, defaulted loans have surged by Tk 73 thousand 586 crores in the last three months.
At the end of September, the amount of bad loans of state-owned banks stood at Tk 1 lakh 26 thousand 111 crores, which is 40.35 percent of their disbursed loans. And the amount of backed out loans in private banks stands at Tk 1 lakh 49 thousand 806 crores, which is 11.88 percent of their disbursed loans.
In contrast, the amount of defaulted loans in foreign banks stands at Tk 3 thousand 245 crores, or 4.99 percent of the disbursed loans, and the amount of backed out loans of specialized banks is Tk 5 thousand 813 crores.
