Banglalink, one of Bangladesh’s leading mobile operators, has announced a partnership with Starlink Mobile to introduce the country’s first satellite-to-mobile connectivity service, pending regulatory approval.
The service will enable direct satellite-powered communication through mobile devices, initially supporting SMS and OTT messaging, with voice and data services expected to follow in later phases.
Starlink Mobile is described as a satellite-to-mobile constellation capable of enabling data, voice, video and messaging services globally.
Banglalink said the initiative aligns with its “People First” approach and aims to improve digital inclusion by reducing coverage gaps in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The service is expected to eliminate network “dead zones” in regions such as hill tracts, riverine islands, coastal zones and offshore areas, where traditional mobile infrastructure is limited.
Company officials said the system will allow users to stay connected as long as they have a clear view of the sky, supporting basic communication and access to essential services.
Banglalink Chief Executive Officer Johan Buse said the initiative is focused on expanding connectivity to underserved communities.
“Connectivity matters most when it reaches people wherever they are. This partnership aims to bridge coverage gaps in the most remote parts of the country,” he said.
Starlink Mobile Vice President Stephanie Bednarek said the collaboration would extend satellite connectivity to millions of users. She added that Bangladesh would become the third market under a broader partnership model with VEON, following deployments in Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
The initiative is part of a wider effort to expand satellite-enabled mobile services across VEON-operated markets, aiming to improve network resilience and emergency communication capabilities.
