Bangladesh finally ended a 22-year winless streak against India on Tuesday night, producing a historic 1–0 victory in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The young team delivered a performance full of grit, determination, and tactical discipline, thrilling over 22,000 fans at the National Stadium, reports the Daily Sun.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday at Moulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium, former national goalkeeper Aminul Haque praised the team’s effort. Aminul, who is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s finest goalkeepers—having conceded just two goals in the 2003 SAFF Championship and been part of an earlier squad that defeated India—called the win a moment of immense pride for the nation.
“Winning against India at home after so many years feels extraordinary. The energy and excitement from the fans were incredible—they enjoyed every second of the match,” Aminul said. He highlighted the team’s collective effort, from goalkeeper Mitul Marma to defenders, midfielders, and attackers, noting that everyone gave their best to secure the historic win.
The defining moment came in the 11th minute when Shekh Morsalin, assisted by Rakib Hossain, calmly finished a counterattack, firing the ball through India’s goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu’s legs. “Morsalin’s finish was fearless and clinical. Strikers like him are crucial for Bangladesh’s future,” Aminul added.
Bangladesh defended with intensity from that moment onward. India pressed hard in the second half, but the hosts’ compact defense and disciplined positioning frustrated every attack. In a tense moment, goalkeeper Mitul slipped, leaving the goal exposed, but Hamza Choudhury sprinted back to make a crucial last-ditch clearance, preserving the lead. Aminul praised Hamza’s all-round contribution, saying his focus, awareness, and commitment inspired the entire team.
Reflecting on the future, Aminul emphasized that the team must build on this momentum with structured planning and more international exposure. “This win is not just a result—it’s inspiration for the future,” he said.
