Bangladesh made a strong start to their first innings after dismissing Ireland for 286 on the second morning of the Sylhet Test. At lunch on Day Two, the hosts reached 109 without loss, with both openers bringing up fluent half-centuries.
Shadman Islam led the charge with an aggressive 58 off 67 balls, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy reached 50 off 77 deliveries. The pair added 109 runs in quick time, reducing the deficit to 177 runs.
Earlier in the morning, Ireland resumed on 270 for 8 but lasted just 14 balls. Taijul Islam struck in his first over of the day to remove Matthew Humphrey, before Hasan Mahmud wrapped up the innings by cleaning up Barry McCarthy.
Later Bangladesh openers were in complete control against the Irish new-ball bowlers, timing the ball sweetly from the outset.
Shadman, particularly fluent, brought up his seventh Test fifty in just 51 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. Joy, more measured in approach, struck seven boundaries and a six over mid-wicket.
Bangladesh scored close to four runs an over early on before accelerating to nearly five per over towards the end of the session.
