BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Zainul Abdin Farroque on Sunday warned that his party will join a nationwide protest movement if the interim government fails to announce the date for the upcoming national election without delay.
Speaking at a discussion organized at the National Press Club in Dhaka, Farroque asserted that the current government was installed with the singular responsibility of ensuring a fair and timely election. “Announce the election date quickly,” he said. “If the election is not held on time, we will join the movement.”
Farroque strongly criticized the interim administration, accusing it of failing to meet public expectations even after nine months in power. He alleged that the government had not passed the critical "tests" it was entrusted with and has instead allowed systemic failures to persist.
He also made serious allegations against government ministries, claiming that corruption and looting are continuing despite the reported departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “Looting in various ministries still goes on. The same misgovernance remains,” he said.
Farroque further demanded transparency surrounding former President Abdul Hamid, alleging that individuals within the government were helping him flee. “The names of those assisting Abdul Hamid must be disclosed immediately,” he said.
The BNP leader’s warning underscores growing frustration within the opposition over the perceived inaction of the interim government in delivering electoral reform and a clear timeline.
