The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court(SC) has set 2 March for the hearing of appeals filed by the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), challenging the High Court(HC) verdict that acquitted Begum Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
Led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division fixed the date after Advocate Asif Hossain(representing ACC) requested a hearing on the appeal.
On 27 November 2024, the High Court acquitted Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, overturning the lower court’s verdict that sentenced her to seven years.
Previously, on 29 October 2018, a Dhaka court convicted Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to seven years in prison.
Almost 14 years ago, on 8 August 2011, the ACC filed a case with Tejgaon Police Station that accused 4 people (including Khaleda Zia) of abusing power to collect funds for the Zia Charitable Trust from unknown sources.
