The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, has stated that the Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has been formed with transparency.
She made the remarks following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the EC Secretariat in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Gwyn Lewis said, “We had an initial meeting with the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner. We are here to express our support for the current Election Commission. We discussed the kind of technical assistance the United Nations can provide to ensure fair elections.”
“It is encouraging to see that this Election Commission has been formed with transparency and will have the support of the interim government to work independently. We look forward to working closely with this commission,” she added.
When asked whether the meeting included discussions about the possible timeline for the parliamentary elections, Gwyn Lewis stated, “There was no discussion about the election timeline in today’s meeting. That decision will be taken politically by the interim government. Our discussions focused solely on technical aspects.”
