On Wednesday, President Mohammed Shahabuddin called on the international community, including Canada, to take robust actions to address the ongoing Rohingya crisis. The President made this appeal during a meeting with Ajit Singh, the newly appointed High Commissioner of Canada to Bangladesh, who presented his credentials at Bangabhaban.
Upon his arrival, High Commissioner Singh was honored with a guard of honor by a contingent from the Presidential Guard Regiment.
During their discussions, President Shahabuddin welcomed the new Canadian envoy and praised Canada as one of Bangladesh's key development partners and trusted friends. He also highlighted Bangladesh’s investment-friendly environment, encouraging Canadian investors to explore opportunities in various sectors, including infrastructure and communications.
The President further emphasized the importance of fostering stronger ties between the two countries by facilitating exchange visits at both the government and private levels, aiming to fully harness the trade and investment potential between Canada and Bangladesh.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Wednesday emphasized that the issue of forcibly displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar remains a significant challenge for Bangladesh. He urged the international community, including Canada, to take decisive action to ensure that the Rohingyas can return to their homeland with dignity and safety.
Highlighting the growing relationship between Bangladesh and Canada, the President expressed hope that the bilateral ties would reach new heights during the tenure of the newly appointed High Commissioner, Ajit Singh.
During the meeting, High Commissioner Singh acknowledged the positive role played by Bangladesh’s labor force in Canada’s economy. He reassured President Shahabuddin of continued Canadian support for Bangladesh's socio-economic development in the future.
The new High Commissioner also sought the President’s full cooperation in carrying out his diplomatic duties. Secretaries to the President were present at the meeting.
