Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests, Climate Change and Water Resources called on Keiichiro Asao, Minister of the Environment of Japan in a bilateral meeting, at the Japanese Representative Office at COP29 in Azerbaijan's capital Baku.
The meeting decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on waste management, carbon crediting, and other areas of mutual cooperation, including climate resilience initiatives.
At the meeting, Syeda Rizwana Hasan noted that waste management is a significant issue in Bangladesh, which is responsible for about 10% of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions (21.04 million tons of CO2-equivalent).
She sought Japan's support in setting up recycling centres, waste-to-energy plants and sanitary landfills for sustainable waste management.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), which is an effective tool for promoting low-carbon technologies. Four JCM projects have already been implemented in Bangladesh under the agreement signed in 2013, including the South-West Transmission Grid Expansion Project. These projects are being implemented with financial and technical assistance from Japan and the Asian Development Bank.
Japan's Environment Minister Keiichiro Asao said that Japan is committed to addressing Bangladesh's environmental challenges through innovation and cooperation.
“We are hopeful of expanding cooperation to meet Bangladesh's NDC targets and are also keen to work in new areas," he said adding that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will include all areas of cooperation.
Later, the Advisor held a meeting with the LDC Chairman on the new 'New Collective Quantified Goals'.
