Bangladesh today joins the global community in observing World AIDS Day, highlighting the need for stronger awareness, prevention, and healthcare access to combat HIV/AIDS nationwide.
This year’s theme, “Remove All Barriers; Build an AIDS-Free Society,” focuses on eliminating obstacles to testing, treatment, and stigma-free care. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has organised a range of programmes in line with international observances.
According to the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and AIDS Control Programme, 1,438 new AIDS cases were detected in the country between November 2023 and October 2024. During the same period, 195 people died of AIDS-related complications.
To commemorate the day, a discussion will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the auditorium of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital. Professor Md Abu Zafar, Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services, will attend as chief guest.
World AIDS Day has been observed globally since 1988 to raise awareness, promote prevention, and honour the lives affected by HIV/AIDS.
