The Maldives has rolled out a groundbreaking anti-tobacco law this month, becoming one of the first nations to completely ban smoking for anyone born after 2006.
The move aims to create a tobacco-free generation across the island nation.
According to the newly implemented law, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, are legally prohibited from using, purchasing, or selling tobacco products in the Maldives.
This measure is designed not just for Maldivian citizens but also extends to foreign visitors and tourists’ ensuring the rule applies uniformly across the country.
Retailers are now required to verify the age and date of birth of every buyer before selling any tobacco product. Failure to comply will result in fines and penalties for the sellers, according to official reports.
The law emphasizes that no one born after 2006 will ever be legally provided tobacco, setting a precedent for long-term generational health protection.
In addition to the tobacco ban, the Maldives government has also tightened regulations on e-cigarettes and vaping devices. These products will now face stricter controls to discourage their use among young people.
The policy aims to combat rising vaping trends and reduce nicotine addiction risks in the younger population.
