A moderately shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported Wednesday evening near David, Distrito de David, Chiriqui, Panama, reports agencies.
Citing German Research Centre for Geoscience (GFZ) media reported that the quake hit at 9:23 pm (Local Time) at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km.
The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1, said GFZ.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Guarumal (pop. 1,600) located 11 km from the epicenter, Pedregal (pop. 17,400) 20 km away, San Pablo Viejo Abajo (pop. 6,000) 24 km away, David (pop. 82,000) 24 km away, Las Lomas (pop. 11,700) 27 km away, Concepcion (pop. 17,700) 30 km away, and El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 33 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) located 33 km from the epicenter.
