Everyone must remain vigilant to ensure that women in our society are not subjected to oppression and are not deprived of their fair rights, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has said.
“Everyone must be vigilant to ensure that women in our society are not subjected to neglect, torture, and oppression, and are not deprived of their fair rights,” he said in a message issued on Friday, marking the International Women Day.
“Women's rights are essential for global progress in peace, security, human rights and sustainable development. Women's equality must now be at the top of the agenda in global action,” he said.
Tarique Rahman said the progress of society and the development of the state are accelerated by the education, training and equal opportunities for women to compete with men. “We must work together to ensure the strong presence of women in the work of changing the world.”
He said the International Women's Day is a very significant day. “It celebrates the economic, political and social empowerment of women worldwide. It creates awareness about the general respect and dignity of women.”
The BNP acting chairman said the importance of the International Women Day in Bangladesh is immense as half of its population is women. “Therefore, if the progress of women's society is achieved, the overall development of the nation will be possible.”
He said late President Ziaur Rahman took groundbreaking steps to ensure greater participation of women in social and state activities.
In continuation of that, Khaleda Zia in her past regime also had taken many effective initiatives to remove the darkness of illiteracy among women, and widely spread education. She also took comprehensive programmes for the socio-economic development of women in this country.
