Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said no one except law enforcement has the authorities to conduct raids.
He told this to the reporters after visiting the Tourist Police Headquarters in Paltan in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
The advisor said, “If the Tourist Police can be made more active by solving its problems including manpower shortage, it will make a big contribution to the tourism sector and the overall economy of the country. Although the Tourist Police was established in 2013, they have a lot of manpower shortage. They do not have their own accommodation. There are some other problems including transportation problems.”
He said the Tourist Police Headquarters is running an office in a rented building. They need their own building. Despite this, they are doing some brilliant jobs. If the Tourist Police can be made more active by solving the problems, many more foreign tourists will come to our country. Although the number of Tourist Police is very small, the number of tourist spots is very large. Therefore, their manpower needs to be increased.
In response to a question from journalists, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that no one except the law enforcement agencies has the authorities to conduct operations.
Stating that it is important to create public awareness about mob justice, the advisor said, “If such incidents occur anywhere, they are immediately brought under the law. The media also plays an important role in creating public awareness in this regard. Necessary instructions have been given to the law enforcement agencies to prevent extortion and robbery on the roads during Eid.”
Earlier, the advisor exchanged views with senior officials of the Tourist Police and provided necessary directions. It was presided over by the Tourist Police Chief and Additional IGP Md. Mainul Hasan. A power-point presentation on the activities of the Tourist Police was presented in the meeting.
