BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said when we will come to power, our diplomacy will be trade-centric.
“Every mission will have to report on their progress on trade expansion and proper engagement with the diaspora,” he said.
Amir Kharsu said this at a program held at a hotel in the capital on Tuesday.
Criticizing the autocratic Awami League government, the BNP senior leader said, “The entire nation was affected by the rise of oligarchs in the economy during the Awami League's regime. Awami League initially held questionable elections. After that, the party occupied all the places one by one. The entire economy was restricted to people of their choices. The country's economy was affected because there was no equal opportunity for everyone.”
He said, “The country's economy will be democratic. If a democratic economy can be established, the country will benefit. Liberal politics and free trade must be given priority to move the country forward. A level playing field must be created for local and foreign investors. We need to ensure that those of us who are in the diaspora get equal opportunities. The investment environment in Bangladesh is better now than in the past. A very good environment has been created for foreign investors now. It will be even better in the days ahead.”
He also said that we should not dwell on old issues of politics. Rather we need to talk about new possibilities and need to ensure that foreign investors never face discrimination.
Highlighting the need for democratization of the economy, the BNP leader said, “We need to be more liberal in terms of trade. We need to deeply consider why only the garment sector got all the big facilities and benefits, while the other 20 potential sectors did not. If equal facilities are ensured for everyone, the cost of doing business will also naturally decrease.”
