BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored the need to build national unity to establish a pro-people government in the country.
He made the demand while virtually addressing a student rally in Thakurgaon on Saturday.
“Now, national unity is a must. Especially, the students’ unity with the people,” he said.
Claiming that Awami League wanted to cling on to power forcibly, Fakhrul said the ousted fascist government destroyed the country’s everything and thus, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of the student-led mass movement.
He also held Awami League responsible for destroying the country’s economy, education and politics and killing thousands of students during the July-August mass upsurge.
BNP founder and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman proclaimed the country’s independence in 1971 with a vision to build a nation free from discrimination and nepotism, he said.
“He (Ziaur Rahman) envisioned a truly democratic country. He did not believe in discrimination or corruption. However, all these adverse elements were introduced in the country during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure,” he said.
The students have made many sacrifices over the years as many politically motivated cases were lodged against them, he said.
“At last, we have become able to oust the fascist government and a new door of possibility has been opened for us. Now we will rebuild the country with a new look,” he said.
