The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has shown police constable Md Mukul Chokder as arrested in a case involving the shooting of six students and the burning of their bodies in Ashulia, Savar, during the July-August uprising.
The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar, issued the order on Thursday after the constable was produced before the court.
Mukul Chokder, previously posted at Dohar police station, was apprehended from his workplace. Another policeman, Malek, was arrested in connection with the same case in Kishoreganj and will also be presented before the tribunal.
On 24 December, the ICT issued arrest warrants against Saiful Islam, a former MP from the Dhaka-19 constituency, and four police officers following a petition filed by the prosecution. The court set 26 January as the deadline for submitting a progress report on the investigation.
On the day the warrants were issued, ICT Chief Prosecutor Advocate Mohammad Tajul Islam refrained from disclosing the names of the police personnel involved, stating that law enforcement authorities had been alerted to prevent their escape.
The Chief Prosecutor said that the tribunal’s investigation agency conducted a thorough inquiry, uncovering that former MP Saiful Islam and members of the Chhatra League directly opened fire on protesters. The investigation identified the ex-MP and four police officials as being involved in the incident.
