BNP has joined the case challenging the validity of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, following a review of the 13th Amendment.
Party's Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has been added as an intervener to present his views based on his application.
On Tuesday, a High Court bench chaired by Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury granted approval for Fakhrul's application.
Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin represented BNP in court.
On August 19, following the initial hearing of a public interest writ petition filed by five prominent individuals, a High Court bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Sashanka Shekhar Sarkar issued this rule.
On that day, lawyer Dr. Sharif Bhuiya represented the petitioners, while Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman appeared for the state, accompanied by Deputy Attorney General Faiz Ahmed.
The petitioners later brought the rule before the court led by Justice Farah Mahbub. The court has set the hearing for October 30.
Badiul Alam Majumdar, the editor of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN), along with four prominent individuals, has filed a writ challenging the validity of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution.
The other four individuals are Tofail Ahmed, M. Hafiz Uddin Khan, Zobairul Haque Bhuiyan, and Zahra Rahman.
The 15th Amendment Act (2011) not only abolished the caretaker government system but also provided constitutional recognition to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the Father of the Nation.
Additionally, the number of reserved seats for women in the National Parliament was increased from 45 to 50; secularism and religious freedom were reinstated in the Constitution.
The principles of nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism were also incorporated as state principles through this amendment.
The 15th Amendment was passed in the National Parliament on June 30, 2011, and was approved by the President on July 3, 2011.
