Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Monday suspended two teachers and seven other employees of the university, for their alleged roles in the killing of English department student Abu Sayed during the anti-quota movement.
A meeting of the university syndicate also decided to ban political party-linked activities on campus, initiate general student elections, probe alleged teacher recruitment irregularities committed during the Awami League regime, among other measures.
Vice Chancellor Md Shawkat Ali announced the decisions of the 10-member syndicate at a press conference.
Detailing the decisions, Md Shawkat said the syndicate has decided to put an end to students’ involvement in extortion, tender manipulation, exercising forceful control over student residential halls and doing business with student dormitory seats.
Students, teachers and other staff cannot get involved with any political party, Md Shawkat said warning those who would continue to have party affiliations in the future would be penalised.
The university had banned party-related student politics on campus on August 12, but now has expanded the ban to cover teachers and other university employees.
Abu Sayed, a student of the university's English department, was killed on July 16 when police fired on him at point-blank range. At the time, he was facing the police in a virutally harmless state while leading demonstrations demanding reforms in the disproportionate government job quota system.
A university probe has found 91 of these are still remaining absent including the two suspended teachers, seven suspended officials and 72 students.
The two suspended teachers were implicated in a murder case filed by Abu Sayed’s brother on August 18. The university has decided to file a separate murder case against the accused.
The suspended teachers are Associate Professor Moshiur Rahman of the math department, and Associate Professor Asaduzzaman Mondal of Department of Public Administration.
On Monday, the university syndicate also decided to form two three-member fact-finding committees to probe allegations of irregularities in the recruitment of three teachers, and undertaking of university development projects.
