6 easy office hacks to stay focused even when you're tired
Symbolic

Most working professionals have been there-- staring at their screens as the afternoon slump hits, tired from back-to-back meetings and endless emails. Fatigue doesn't just slow you down; it also affects your focus and overall productivity. In turn, this makes doing even simple tasks feel impossible. But here's the good news: psychology shows small, simple science-backed tweaks can help recharge your body and mind without having too much of caffeine or taking afternoon naps. Here we list some of them:

Practice taking microbreaks

Ever feel your brain fogging up after continuously working for hours? The quick fix for this is taking microbreaks. The idea is to take short 1-2 minute pauses or breaks throughout the day, every 30 minutes just to reset your attention by letting your mind wander. A 2021 study from the University of Groningen shows that taking such breaks helps one counteract mental fatigue by monitoring subtle performance dips, boosting focus afterwards.

So, make it a point to stand up, stretch, or simply watch the world go by from the window for just 1-2 minutes, every 30-40 minutes. This will help you relax and recharge in just a few minutes.

Practice the Pomodoro technique

According to the Pomodoro technique, break your work into small batches and take short breaks in between to recharge. For instance: work for 25 minutes, take a break for 5 minutes. This fights decision fatigue, where constant choices drain willpower. A Nature study titled 'Unraveling the interplay between mental workload, occupational fatigue, physiological responses, and cognitive performance' (published on August 1, 2024) linked high mental workload to nonlinear fatigue spikes, proving that timed bursts improve performance in the long run.

Optimise your workspace lighting

Dim office lights make one feel tired; it mimics dusk and disrupts a person's circadian rhythms. Instead, swap dull light for bright, natural light at work and see how it makes you feel more alert— and psychology backs it via attention restoration theory. Research in the 2023 APA Work in America report ties better lighting to reduced fatigue and higher productivity.

Try the 20-20-20 rule

Constantly staring at your screen strains the eyes, and it makes you feel tired. Instead, follow the 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps reduce digital eye strain, thus improving your productivity in the long run.

Practice quick breathing exercises

When exhaustion hits, shallow breaths starve your brain of oxygen, reducing your concentration. So, try the 4-7-8 breathing technique instead: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. Do three rounds at your desk— no one notices. It's like a stealth nap for your nervous system, making you feel calm amid the chaos. In turn, focus returns.

Eat brain-boosting foods that sharpen your mind

Hanger (hunger + anger) and fatigue lead to zero focus. To combat it, instead of opting for tea or coffee, grab brain-boosting snacks like nuts, berries, or dark chocolate. How do they help? Well, these foods stabilise your blood sugar, as per productivity studies showing nutrition curbs mental slowdowns. A handful keeps you steady without the jitters.
