Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has called for the strict enforcement of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, emphasizing its role in safeguarding citizens. Speaking at the 28th meeting of the National Consumer Rights Protection Council on Sunday, held at the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection in Dhaka, Bashir highlighted the importance of raising public awareness about consumer rights.
"If consumers become aware of their rights, they will develop the desire to claim and protect them," he said, urging stakeholders to educate the public and ensure the law is properly enforced to benefit all.
Bashir also stressed that citizens must recognize their responsibilities to society, suggesting the integration of consumer rights and ethical concepts into academic curricula to foster greater accountability and awareness from an early age.
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Commerce Secretary (routine charge) Md Navid Shafiullah, Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Md Abdul Alim Khan, FBCCI Administrator Md Hafizur Rahman, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) General Secretary Md Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, BSTI Director General SM Ferdous Alam, and a representative from the Directorate General of Drug Administration.
Discussions centered on strengthening collaboration among organizations, enhancing consumer protection mechanisms, and promoting fair practices across sectors.
Bashir reaffirmed the government’s commitment to consumer rights, noting that proper enforcement of the law is essential for creating a just and equitable society.
