Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) President Mohammad Hatem said the country’s banking sector needs reformation as lack of reform is the biggest crisis in the country from the perspective of trade and commerce.
If the banking sector is not reformed, the country’s business sector will face a difficult situation in the future. Around 150-60 factories have already closed down. More than one lakh of workers have become unemployed, he said.
Mohammad Hatem came up with the observation while speaking at a roundtable on Wednesday.
Vernacular daily Bangladesh Pratidin organized the roundtable titled ‘Expectation of the New Year’ at Bashundhara City Conference Hall in the capital.
The BKMEA boos said, "More factories will be closed in the upcoming days. One of the reasons for this is the banking sector’s policy, which was taken during the previous fascist government. The loan classification rules are equal to strangle the businessmen. We will have to withdraw such an act. Serious reformation is needed in the banking sector due to the huge amount of looting."
He said, "I have told earlier that IMF never gives prescriptions for the wellbeing of the country. A country that has fully complied with the IMF prescription has become paralyzed. We might comply with some prescriptions from the IMF. But the state will have to make the decision which prescription it will take and which won’t. Furthermore, the target of LDC graduation must be suspended to save the country's business."
