UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has come to Dhaka today(Tuesday). Talking about different aspects of the recent uprising, he has said that the "Fact Finding Committee" is working on the "July Genocide" issue, adding that they are taking the matter very seriously.
After meeting the Law Adviser On Tuesday(29th October), he made these remarks.
Volker Türk said that he had discussed the rule of law and human rights issues with the Law adviser. According to him, these two things are interconnected. He urged that human rights must be ensured in the various reform initiatives undertaken by the current government.
Law adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul said, “The government's journey towards the election has begun. A search committee has been formed in order to establish the Election Commission. It will be gazetted when the Chief adviser signs it. Perhaps he has already signed it.”
“Volker Türk has affirmed his full support for the interim government. He talked about the need to ensure the independence of the judiciary. I said that we are working on it. He talked about the International Criminal Tribunal and asked whether the death penalty could be abolished,” said the Law adviser.
However, in response to Türk’s question about abolishing the death penalty, Dr. Nazrul has said that the rules won’t be changed until justice is served against fascists.
