Members of the Anti-discrimination student movement are selling vegetables and essential commodities at fair prices in all districts and upazilas across the country, aiming to break syndicates and lessen the burden on common people, reports BSS.

The initiatives have been taken to sell the products due to soaring prices of daily necessities in the markets, said Abdul Hannan Masud, chief organiser of the Anti-discrimination student movement, adding that the students will continue selling vegetables until the monopoly of the market syndicate is eradicated.

He said the students are selling essential products through coordination with the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs).

The members of Anti-discrimination Student Movement are selling various vegetables at a discount rate of Tk 30-40 per kg compared to the market price. The vegetable sale is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. The buyers are happy as they are buying daily necessities at a lower price.

Director General (DG) of Department of Agricultural Marketing Md. Masud Karim told BSS that prices of most commodities except onions and potatoes are on a downward trend in the kitchen markets.

Vegetable production is now lower due to the offseason, he said, adding that the recent floods also damaged a lot of vegetable farm lands in 13 districts, leading to less supply and causing a sharp rise in the price of vegetables.

Karim also said the government has taken steps to sell eggs, potatoes, onions, papayas, bitter gourd, pointed gourd, green chilies, arum (kachur mukhi) and gourd at subsidized price in city markets to reduce people’s economic hardship.

Students are selling vegetables including gourd at Tk 25 per piece, cucumber at Tk 28 per kg, onion at Tk 100 per kg, garlic at Tk 210 per kg and green papaya at Tk 25 per kg, lady’s finger at Tk 55 per kg, brinjal at Tk 50 per kg, potato at Tk 50 per kg, potal at Tk 45 per kg, kakarol at Tk 60 per kg, sweet pumpkin at Tk 45 per kg and snake gourd at Tk 35 per Kg.

Traders in different city markets are selling vegetables including potato at Tk 55-60  per kg, green chillies at Tk 180-200 per kg, onions at Tk 120-140 per kg, brinjal at Tk 80 per kg, shrimp at Tk 70 per kg, corolla at Tk 80 per kg, cucumber at Tk 50 taka per kg, gourd at Tk 45-50 per piece, been at Tk 160 per kg, carrot at Tk 160 per kg, flower cabbage at Tk 50-60 per piece, tomato at Tk 160 per kg, green papaya at Tk 40 per kg, lady’s finger at Tk 80 per kg, garlic at Tk 220 per kg, pointed gourd at Tk 60 per kg and beans at Tk 160 per kg, carrot at Tk 180 per kg.
