Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will seek support from European Union leaders on Thursday for his “victory plan” to conclude the war with Russia, reports AP.
He will address EU leaders at their summit in Brussels before meeting with NATO defense ministers. The EU has been a crucial ally for Ukraine, which is a candidate for membership in the 27-nation bloc, as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion that began over two and a half years ago.
Zelenskyy introduced a five-point plan to Ukraine’s parliament on Wednesday but kept some confidential details private, sharing them only with key allies, including the United States.
ATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte was initially cautious in his reaction to the plan but later assured that all 32 NATO allies are united in their commitment to ensure Ukraine's success and prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from achieving his goals.
Rutte emphasized that Ukraine belongs in NATO, though he did not specify when it might join. Zelenskyy has stated that an invitation to NATO is essential to his “victory plan,” as it would provide a vital security guarantee against Russia.
