Bashundhara Shuvosangho hosted a friendly cricket match at Dhaka College on Wednesday to present the sport as an alternative pastime to drug addiction, and as a mean to raise anti-narcotics awareness.
The cricket match featured two teams: Shaheed Nazrul Islam XI, led by Shuvosangho’s Dhaka College unit President Mahmudul Hasan Shovon, and Shaheed AK Kaiyum XI, led by the unit’s General Secretary Emdadul Haque. The teams were named after the two Dhaka College students who were martyred in the Liberation War.
Winning the toss, Shaheed Nazrul Islam XI chose to bat first. They scored 98 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 12 overs. Chasing the target, Shaheed AK Kaiyum XI were all out for 83 runs, handing the opponent a 15-run victory.
Afterwards, a prize distribution ceremony was held, where the organizers handed over the champion trophy to the winners and the runner-up trophy to the runners-up. Leaders of Bashundhara Shuvosangho and students of Dhaka College were present on the occasion.
President Mahmudul Hasan Shovon said, “Drugs are extremely harmful to our society. Almighty Allah has forbidden drugs. They damage human mental and intellectual capacity. Sports play an important role in building a healthy and disciplined life for young people. We want the youth to stay away from drugs through sports.”
General Secretary Emdadul Haque said, “Drug addiction is one of the biggest problems facing today’s youth. It is destroying countless families. Drugs harm health, whereas sports improve it. So say no to drugs and yes to sports.”
Match official Mohammad Russell said, “There is no alternative to sports in building a drug-free society.”
