Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan thinks local government elections should be held before the national election.
He, however, said the interim government will decide in this regard in consultation with the political parties.
The adviser came up with the observation while addressing at the deputy commissioners conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.
Asif Mahmud said, “Deputy and divisional commissioners have been performing additional duties in various posts of the local government. For this reason, they (deputy and divisional commissioners) are facing problems. They want local elections. We want local elections before national polls. The issue was discussed in the meeting of the National Consensus Commission. However, no decision was taken in that meeting. The government is handling the issue. Local elections are needed to hold the national election free and fair and maintain the law and order.”
The adviser also said those who are involved in genocide will not be able to participate in any election. However, those who are not involved in injustice and crimes can apologize and participate in the election.
