Nagorik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said the interim government has arrived at a difficult time in the political, economic and social context of the country, which has passed six months after the mass uprising of students and the public.
He said this at a discussion event titled 'Election Reform Analysis' organized by the State Reform Forum at the Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club on Saturday.
Manna said that the interim government has arrived at a crucial time after six months. The law and order situation in the country is weak. However, in terms of the rationale for supporting the interim government, Manna said, "We criticize the government but do not take it to court. We know that if this government is defeated, we will also be defeated."
The platform of the anti-discrimination student movement has also demanded that the trial process of top leaders including Awami League president Sheikh Hasina, who ousted in the mass uprising. However, Manna commented that organizing the elections will take time if we are only busy with this process. He said, “Many are claiming that the Awami League should be tried, and there will be no vote before that. But it turned out that it took six years to hold trial process fully. Then the people would not accept it. So, judging everything with emotion and anger will not work.”
Manna commented that the government should make efforts to defuse the tension that is prevailing over the speech of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said, "If someone provokes and you got provoked, and if this keeps happening every three months, you will not be able to vote in the next three years. You will need an environment to vote. You want to win, but can you win by just showing anger against fascism? The victory that we have achieved by fighting and giving blood must be protected with intelligence, stability, and calmness.”
The president of Nagorik Oikya also gave suggestion on how to deal with the politics of the Awami League.
