Co-secretary of international affairs for BNP and a former member of parliament Barrister Rumeen Farhana has said the party has been fighting for participatory, impartial and fair elections for 17 years, reports BSS.
“That fight is still going on because presently there is no elected government in the country. There is an unelected interim government. Our fight will continue until an elected government comes,” she said.
She said this at a training workshop titled "The 31-Point for State Structure Reform and Public Engagement" at the Shilpokola Academy auditorium on Wednesday afternoon.
Organised by the Central Training Affairs Committee of BNP for the leaders and workers of Rangpur District and Metropolitan units of the party and its associate bodies, central, local and divisional level leaders also participated in the event.
Rumeen Farhana told BNP leaders and activists that just as the fascist Awami League were overthrown through a movement based on unity, the movement to form an elected government based on unity must be continued.
She said that BNP has never held or supported rigged elections. It will not support rigged elections in the future either.
“BNP will go to parliament on the basis of people's support, love and trust to form a government.”
Urging party leaders and activists to be prepared for the upcoming parliamentary elections, Barrister Rumeen Farhana said that if the elections are at least fair, BNP will win two-thirds of the seats.
“However, we should not be overconfident. We must remember that the ground we are fighting on is difficult and tougher than before.”
She said, “Everyone has to represent the BNP in their area. You are the reflection of the BNP, so you should act in such a way that people love the BNP more, they are inspired by you and strengthen the BNP's hand.”
Rumeen Farhana said that the Awami League had always suppressed and oppressed the people in opposition in this country. They did not allow them to speak or to stay in their own villages and homes.
“They (Awami League) had made life miserable by attacking the opposition people and filing cases against them.”
"The fascist Awami League created a situation due to which Tarique Rahman could not come to the country. Not only that, it also sent Begum Khaleda Zia to prison even at the age of 76," said Rumeen Farhana.
She said the names of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, uncompromising leader Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tareq Rahman are inextricably linked with the name Bangladesh.
"The Zia family has sacrificed their lives for the country. If the Zia family is good, the country and the people are also good," Rumeen Farhana said.
Regarding the new Bangladesh and reforms, she said that although different parties use these words, the fathers and dreamers of all this are BNP and Tarique Rahman.
Later, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman virtually joined and addressed the event as the chief guest.
