Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday said the government will import eggs if necessary to curb the prices of this daily essential.
He said this in response to questions from reporters at a press conference at Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital.
“If eggs import decreases the prices of eggs then the decision will be taken to import eggs from abroad. But it will take time,” he said.
The minister said his ministry is trying to reduce the prices of eggs through discussions with some ministries including agriculture and fisheries ministries.
Tipu Munshi blamed that one of the reasons for the recent hike in commodity prices is that some unscrupulous businesses are taking advantage of the fuel oil price hike.
He also said due to the increase in the prices of fuel oil, the prices of rice should increase by 50 paisa per Kg. But it has increased by Tk 4 per Kg which is illogical.
Tipu, however, hoped that the prices will be under control by October next.
