Former U.S. President Donald Trump said he has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, according to a report by the New York Post on Saturday.
In an interview aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump declined to specify how many times they had spoken, saying only, “I better not say.” He added, “Putin wants to see people stop dying.”
Neither the Kremlin nor the White House immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment outside business hours.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in January that Putin was willing to hold a call with Trump and was awaiting a signal from Washington.
Trump also said he expects to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy next week to discuss ending the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and will reach its third anniversary on February 24. Thousands, mostly Ukrainians, have been killed in the conflict.
The New York Post quoted Trump as saying he has “always had a good relationship with Putin” and has a concrete plan to end the war, though he did not reveal details. “I hope it’s fast,” he said. “Every day people are dying. This war is so bad in Ukraine. I want to end this damn thing.”
