U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken described the Ukraine war as a defining moment for the international rules-based order during an interview on The New York Times' “The Interview” podcast. He warned that allowing Russia to act with impunity would embolden other aggressors and threaten global stability.
“The stakes in Ukraine go beyond its borders; this is about upholding principles that are essential to peace and stability worldwide,” Blinken said.
The Secretary reaffirmed the United States' unwavering support for Ukraine, outlining the comprehensive nature of U.S. assistance, which includes military aid, economic support, and humanitarian relief. He stressed that this aid is crucial not just for Ukraine’s defense but also for safeguarding democratic values and maintaining international security.
Blinken also highlighted NATO’s strengthened unity in response to the war, calling it a significant strategic failure for Russia. “Russia aimed to divide NATO, but the result has been the exact opposite. NATO is stronger and more united than ever,” he remarked.
Regarding a resolution to the conflict, Blinken reiterated that any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting outcomes that reward aggression or violate international law.
Blinken’s remarks underscored the Biden administration’s commitment to defending Ukraine and the global order in the face of authoritarian threats.
