As Myanmar’s continuous provocation including shelling mortar inside Bangladesh border hasn’t stopped, former ambassador, international relations expert and political analysts have shown their deep concern at Myanmar’s desperate stance.
They’ve expressed their opinions to the senior reporters of The Bangladesh Pratidin on the issue.
International relations expert, professor of University of Dhaka Imtiaz Ahmed said Bangladesh should go to United Nations and lodge complaint on the issue. If necessary they have to raise the issue in Security Council. Not only UN, they have to raise the issue in all kinds of international and bilateral forum.
He said this while talking to The Bangladesh Pratidin.
Dr Imtiaz Ahmed said firing on Myanmar-Bangladesh border is increasing day by day, which really triggered tensed situation. This made it clear that Myanmar military is trying to entice us so that Bangladesh shows reaction. If Bangladesh shows reaction, it will benefit them in the end and they can postpone Rohingyas’ rehabilitation process by using it as an excuse. So, Bangladesh has to keep their head cool in this circumstance and present the issue on international platform.
Dr Imtiaz Ahmed said Bangladesh need to draw attention on what Myanmar’s doing as they are breaching the international law by shelling mortars inside another country. Shelling mortar inside another country in the name of mitigating internal conflict doesn’t comply with the international law. If Myanmar thinks they can’t mitigate internal rebellion, in that case UN Security Agency can send international force there. May be the militants groups are grabbing the chance of the weakness of Myanmar military.
Bangladesh needs to raise the issue in all regional and international forums including UN, ASEAN to make the global community aware of the matter.
Former vice-chancellor of National University and political analyst, Professor Dr Harun-or-Rashid told The Bangladesh Pratidin, the incidence of mortar shelling inside Bangladesh isn’t stopped even after lodging strong protest by summoning the Myanmar Envoy, which is really a matter of grave concern. However, we’ve to solve the issue by making bi-lateral discussion.
About Bangladesh’s to-do on the context of Myanmar’s crossing the limit he said India and Myanmar hold strong influence over Myanmar and both are our friendly state. Bangladesh can take help from them in this issue and go to UN if necessary.
Professor Harun-or-Rashid said if war breaks out, then not only Bangladesh and Myanmar, but also other countries in the region will suffer a lot. Hence, in this circumstance, both countries should not involve in war or any tensed-situation.
Myanmar is our neighboring state and keeping good term with the neighbor is equally important to both countries, he added.
Former ambassador Waliur Rahman told The Bangladesh Pratidin that as Myanmar has already apologize for their aggressive activities, we’ve to keep the circumstances in observation. I think we’ve to raise the issue in UN and we shouldn’t keep any hesitation about it.
He said we need to raise the issue in the ongoing general assembly of UN. Recently, the United States has raised the Ukraine issue very intelligently in UN. In the same way, as a peace-loving country Bangladesh should elaborate Myanmar’s aggressive approaches to the UN.
The former ambassador said government and security forces have to remain so vigilant that Maynamar can’t breach our sovereignty by any means. However, the time for our army to go to the border hasn’t come yet.
Waliur Rahman said Myanmar Envoy already showed apology to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Besides, government has asked the Ansar and Bangladesh Border Guard members to remain alert. So, I think it’s not going to be a big problem.
