State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque said no further permission will be granted to hold fairs at stadiums, stressing the need to protect sports facilities, reports UNB.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a session of the DC Conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Responding to concerns about sports activities being disrupted by fairs at district-level grounds, he said the government has already stopped approving such events. “We will not allow stadiums to be used for fairs in future,” he added.
On plans by city corporations to rehabilitate hawkers on playgrounds, he said authorities have inspected the sites and those suitable for sports will not be repurposed. “If necessary, we will engage in discussions to ensure playgrounds remain dedicated to sports,” he said.
The minister also said a nationwide project is underway to renovate and make district stadiums, sports complexes and swimming facilities fully functional to support grassroots athlete development.
He highlighted the ongoing “Notun Kuri Sports” programme across all 64 districts and expressed hope that a second phase will be launched, aiming to strengthen coordination from district to union levels and drive long-term social and economic benefits.
