The Calcutta High Court has directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay a total monthly maintenance of Rs 4 lakh (approximately Tk5.7 lakh) to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter, amid an ongoing legal battle.
According to a report by The New Indian Express, the court ruled that Shami must pay Rs 1.5 lakh to Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh to their daughter each month as interim alimony.
"In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner No. 1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just, fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both petitioners, till disposal of the main application," Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee stated in the order on Tuesday.
The court also noted that Shami would be at liberty to voluntarily assist his daughter with educational or other reasonable expenses beyond the specified amount.
Jahan had moved the high court challenging a lower court order issued in 2023 that had directed the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to her and Rs 80,000 to the daughter.
She filed a complaint against Shami and his family in March 2018 under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, alleging physical and mental abuse, neglect of their daughter, dowry harassment, and even match-fixing. The couple had married in April 2014.
Jahan had initially sought Rs 7 lakh per month for herself and an additional Rs 3 lakh for her daughter as interim monetary relief. However, the lower court had rejected her plea and awarded only Rs 80,000 per month for the daughter.
That order was later modified, requiring Shami to pay Rs 50,000 to Jahan and Rs 80,000 to their daughter.
In the latest ruling, the high court said, "The opposite party/husband’s income, financial disclosure and earnings establish that he is in a position to pay a higher amount. The petitioner’s wife, who has remained unmarried and is independently raising the child, is entitled to a standard of maintenance similar to what she enjoyed during the marriage."
